There are many different types of tobacco products and there are also different ingredients in these tobacco products. According to Tobacco Free Life, smoking tobacco products carry with them an increased health risk. In addition to highly addictive nicotine, smokers can also inhale anywhere from 4,800 to 7,000 other chemicals – depending on what is inside their cigarette! These chemicals are a byproduct of over 600 different ingredients found in every cigarette and most other tobacco products. Knowing about these different tobacco products and what is actually inside of these products is very important. It is good to know what ingredients are in something because an individual can be allergic to what is in the product. So, let me school you on these tobacco products and the ingredients within these products.
Like I said before, there are many different types of tobacco products. We have cigarettes, which is a roll of tobacco. About 5.8 trillion cigarettes were smoked worldwide in 2014. That was only in 2014 so I can imagine the number of cigarettes smoked now that we are in 2018. Then you have light and menthol cigarettes. Just because it is called light, people think that it reduces risks to one’s health but there is no scientific evidence that says this. The menthol cigarettes contain substances usually found in peppermint and spearmint plants which causes a cooling sensation while smoking. Because of this, people believe that they are avoiding the worst from cigarettes, but again where is the evidence? We also have cigars and pipes which smokers claim they are avoiding the worst health dangers. To be honest a cigar contains half an ounce of tobacco which is really as much as a pack of cigarettes. Hookahs play in the same category as cigarettes and an average hookah session last 1 hour. So, someone who is smoking a hookah within that amount of time is inhaling 90,000 ml of smoke. Lastly, we have bidis and clove cigarettes which I never heard of before.
Ingredients within these tobacco products include:
· Benzene
· Cadmium
· Arsenic
· Methanol
· Formaldehyde
· Hexamine
· Lead
Moral of the story is if you are a smoker, be aware of what you are actually smoking!
I am personally not a smoker, so I was not fully aware of all of the chemicals that are taken in when you smoke. I think that a lot of people don't even take it into consideration what they are smoking, which is very dangerous. Honestly, I don't even know why people start, especially if they already know the consequences of it. It's just not worth the risk. I would definitely need to do more research on the ingredients to understand the effects of them on the human body. Thank you for this information!

What the heck, I didn't know cigarettes contained substances from peppermint and spearmint plants; I wonder if that plays a part in people's addictions. Like Rachel, I'm not a smoker, and I'm not planning on becoming one either. I'm glad that I'm not at much of a risk in consuming those harmful products found in cigarettes. I've always known that cigarettes are bad for you and heard that one cigarette takes 11 seconds off of your life... this could be wrong, but I don't know. I often hear people protesting that vaping/hookahs aren't as bad as cigarettes, but aren't they wrong? People tend to do things that makes them feel good, but they could be hurting themselves in the process. Your post has persuaded me even more to not try cigarettes or any tobacco products.
ReplyDeleteThat is gross. The ingredients in cigarettes! People are lighting them on fire to put these things into their body but they are also breathing these things back out for the rest of us to take in. We are all aware that tobacco is addictive but what do these other things do to us? Like lead? That is dangerous just to be around so I am curious as to what it does to our body if we ingest it or breath it in. Arsenic is poison so putting it in cigarettes to smoke sounds like a bad idea.
ReplyDeletePeople are also finding other ways to use tobacco without smoking. There is chew tobacco, it can be found in hookahs, and vapes.
This was an interesting read. Look forward to your next post.
Your post was very informative. I already wasn't a smoker, but after reading this post makes me not want to smoke even more. This is not okay! the ingredients you named that are in cigarettes have terrible long term affects on a individuals' body. For example, long term exposure to benzene can cause have harmful effects on bone marrow and loss of blood cells. I wish people knew paid attention the ingredients that are in cigarettes, because if people paid attention then the decrease in cigarette use would go down.
ReplyDeleteAndrea,
ReplyDeleteEven the names of the ingredients in tobacco products sound like they can kill you! After a while of using these products, it's no question that something in your body is going to fail. I just don't think it's worth it, not judging those who do, but I just wouldn't. It's not worth your teeth, it's not worth your life.
