Introduction
According to CDC, cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causes many diseases, and reduces the health of smokers in general. This is something that really bothers me because I know a lot of people who smoke. Kowing that all these things can happen to someone just from smoking is really scary. The risk of these factors will lower if smokers quit smoking.Smoking & Death
Believe it or not, cigarette smoking is the leading cause of death in the U.S. With that being said, people really should stop smoking. Knowing that smoking is the leading cause of death in our state, people are just killing themselves. There are more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States related to smoking. There are many other leading causes of death such as HIV, vehicle accidents, drug abuse, alcohol use and much more but smoking causes more deaths than all of these combined.
Diseases One Can Get From Smoking
You can get a cardiovascular disease which affects the heart and blood vessels. Smoking also causes strokes and coronary heart disease. Strokes occur when a clot blocks the blood flow to part of your brain and a blood vessel in or around your brain bursts. Wowwww sounds very dangerous and scary, right? If smokers knew that something within their bodies can burst from smoking, they shouldn't be doing it. This is something that has happened to someone that I know. I really hope smokers see that this is real and it can happen to them. Smoking can also cause lung disease by damaging your airways and the small air sacs that are found in your lungs. This ties into lung cancer and people who already have asthma will cause all this to be worst because it triggers them even harder. Lastly, smoking can cause cancer ANYWHERE in your body. One may have cancer in their liver, bladder, pancreas, stomach, etc. These are things that an individual can also die from.
Smoking Affects Your Overall Health
Did you know that smoking can prevent a woman from getting pregnant? Well if you didn't know don't feel bad because this is something that I just learned as well. Even if this doesn't happen to a woman there are still risk that the baby can be affected. Things like early delivery, SIDS, death before the baby is born, etc. Not only does smoking affect a mother and her child but it can also affect men's sperm which can cause miscarriages and birth defects.
*SMOKERS... KNOWING THAT ALL THIS CAN HAPPEN TO YOU, JUST SIMPLY STOP SMOKING. IT'S BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH AND YOUR HEALTH IS IMPORTANT.. KEEP THAT IN MIND.
I simply had no idea that this was the leading cause of death in the United States. That is very interesting. I think that if more people were educated on the effects of smoking, that it wouldn't be as big of an issue. My grandpa actually got throat cancer from smoking and he overcame the cancer and then 20 years later (which was this January) he passed away because the throat cancer came back. In my opinion, there is no point to even start. Having a family member pass away because of it has turned me strongly against smoking and I hope that with more education people can learn to feel the same.
ReplyDeleteThis is a little bit off topic but what about vaping? I know that this has become a norm for college students and I was wondering what long-term effects vaping has on overall health? Nicotine vs. Non-nicotine? I always hear that it isn't as bad and it is a good alternative, but is that necessarily true?
Overall, I really enjoyed your post this week. It was very informative and I learned quite a bit. I look forward to your next blog!

Woah! That is so scary! Why are people still smoking it's 2018?? I had no idea cigarette smoke is the leading cause of death. I would have guessed it would have been cancer or some other noncommunicable disease such as heart or cardiovascular disease.
ReplyDeleteI read something saying that second hand smoke is worst than smoking in general... that's super scary because that affects children and the lives of people that don't even smoke.
If I go into an apartment that smells like cigarettes I will never live there because of the potential old smoke I can be inhaling.
I have a bunch of friends that smoke cigarettes or smoke marijuana. I wonder if the diseases apply to smoking weed... that would be interesting to post a blog about that.
I saw before that smoking causes collagen in the skin to be weaker meaning more wrinkles, ahhh! as well as saggy skin in body parts no one wants to get saggy, especially for girls.
Great post!
I am not so sure smoking is the leading cause of death. I have no doubt that it causes issues and illness that can lead to death. What really gets me, is the proof of all the health concerns caused by smoking and people still willing smoke. Not to mention, smoking affects more people than just the person who smokes. I was on campus, walking behind someone smoking, which is illegal on campus, and I was choking on his cloud of smoke he left behind him.
ReplyDeleteThe result of smoking on the human body are just unappealing at best. Smoking affects your internal organs more than can be repaired by quitting but smoking also affects the outer appearance as well. Teeth can turn yellow and brown, nails turn yellow and are more brittle, hair is weaker, and the skin ages and wrinkles way before the natural ages. What about the smell; it lingers even after the clothes or person has been washed. No, thank you!
Great Post
This is exactly why I hate smoking! it causes so many problems with your body and it can potentially lead to death. That is scary to know that just by smoking a cigarette you can start decreasing your lifespan. I've never been a fan of cigarettes and I just don't understand why people smoke them sometimes. Every time I'm around a cigarette I have to walk away because the smell is horrible and then I don't want the smoke to get into my lungs. Don't people realize the harm they're bringing to their bodies? and then they're effecting others by their smoke roaming in the air, and us catching second-hand smoke. Second hand smoke is another way to develop health problems, and it's crazy to know that another person who was smoking is responsible. Smoking is a huge problem that our country faces, and I hope the problem starts to decrease soon. This was a good post and I hope others were impacted by it to.
ReplyDeleteAndrea,
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'm not a smoker. I used to work at a gas station and I never actually realized how many people smoke cigarettes and how expensive they are. Like nine dollars?! For some cancer sticks?! I think NOT. I hate the smell, when you're around someone smoking them, you're going to smell like it. And as a person who is big on scents, I honestly could not. But it just sounds like it does you no good, your gums turn all brown and yucky, your teeth fall out, you even said your brain can burst, like what?! No thanks!
I never understood why people needed to smoke cigarettes, and yeah I know it's a addiction but what about cigarettes makes it so addicting? The reason why I wanted to know why a lot of people felt like they needed to smoke, because I use to work at Solider Field as a ticket taker for for Bears game; and when it hit half time people would come up to me and ask could they leave Solider Field really fast to smoke a cigarette and come back in, I would tell them no because that's against the rules, but that is not the point, the point is after that I would wonder why they needed to smoke that bad. It surprises me because a lot of people are aware of the dangers of what cigarettes could do, but people continue to smoke them.
ReplyDeleteI really like your blog Andrea. It really caught my eye with the different colors and fonts! I already thought that smoking was pretty gross before, but you just confirmed it for me. I wonder why so many people do it if they know just how bad it is for you!
